Aloha and welcome to our home! We have had a lot of fun over the past 7 years, fixing up our 700 square foot cottage on our family farm… but our home wasn’t originally built as such.
In the early 1900s, our love nest began as a secondary home on the property, which was built by the original owners. The main home, also located on the farm was a smaller one- complete with an outhouse and an outdoor brick oven. During the war, the original owners could not purchase lumber, so in order to expand the main home, they took two rooms off of what is now our cottage, and added them right onto the main home. Talk about being resourceful!
In the early 1990’s, my family purchased the farm.
Since then, the cottage mainly served as a storage room/ place for our family to stay when in town. The little old shack was just enough for that.
Fast forward to 2011. My husband and I decided to move back home to Hawaii after being away on the mainland for college, plus a few more years of fun and adventure. Both of us are originally from Oahu, but Maui called, and so we went…
When we arrived, we went straight to work on the cottage. We worked day and night, with the help of my super-duper handy dad & loving mom. (They really are the best… we call my dad MacGuyver for a reason!) First, we ripped up all the old carpet. There were different colors in each room and it had definitely seen better days. In the living room, the carpet was blue. Actually, it was a bluish brown- with years of dirt, caked right in there. The carpet in the kitchen was a blackish brown with tiny red polka dots- yikes!
Once the carpet was out, super dad fixed/replaced a few windows that were old and rotted.
Then came the paint. Super dad and super mom helped my husband and I paint the entire interior for the next few weeks. It was so much work, but so rewarding to see the place immediately brighten up. The walls went from a dark brown wood paneling to a bright and cheery white. It was like night and day.
Then again, super dad helped us to install the flooring. I can still remember, when the floors went in, we did the living room first. When that room was done, I couldn’t stop dancing around in it. It looked amazing!
Here we are… 7 years and about 500 DIY projects later, we have a little blog to share our story. The fun has just begun! Come join us while we continue to work on our little fixer upper, as I share all of my fun projects, feng shui tips and give you a little peek into our Maui life!
