I know many of you are now faced with the task of working from home as a result of our global pandemic, and I wanted to share some tips with you on how to make the transition a bit smoother.
I have worked from home for the past 8 years now and wouldn't have it any other way; however, I know this is not the case for everyone.
Some may enjoy going in to work to see others, some prefer to go in to a physical place of work to be more productive, some may enjoy listening to a podcast on their commute, and the list goes on.
Here are a few tips that have helped me to remain productive while working from my home office.
1- Designate an area as your own.
I believe this is the foundation that must be set in order to create a functional and productive work space. Living in a 700 square foot home, I know that it can be a challenge at times, but this step is key.
For me, my personal work space is located in a small, 3 foot area at the end of our kitchen island. Now that may not sound ideal to many, but it really works for me. It is a nice open space in the house where I can see all of our kitchen and living room areas. When I look out our living room window, I have a beautiful view of the ocean. When I look to my right, we have lush green tangerine tress with vibrant colors. These "views" make my designated space an ideal location for me.
2- Comfortable seating makes all the difference.
No matter how long you may be seated, this is always helpful. I find it much easier to concentrate when I am comfortable in my work space. It also helps to get you motivated to get some work done, knowing you will have a comfy seat to rest in.
3- Tidy up the visible areas around you.
This one is HUGE for me... it may just be my personality (I love a clean and tidy space), but without it, I literally can't function! I may have a pressing deadline but if I have a messy house, it needs to be taken care of first so that I have a clear space and mind to work with 🙂
4- Decorate your space and make it your own.
Here's where it gets fun! Personalize your space no matter how big or small it may be. Add fresh flowers, keep it organized, add some fun wallpaper or gather up some accessories to freshen it up. It is amazing what this can do to make your designated space one that you will want to spend time in!
5- Set your "work hours".
This one is important! Ok, they all are but this one is really important. It is easy to get carried away on a project or become stressed out about a deadline and work all day and all night to get things done. I am guilty of doing so and I'm sure many others who work from home can say the same, but it is so important to "clock out" so you can be present with your families... especially during this time. So set those work hours and make sure that your family gives you the space you need to get your work done so you can clock out on time 😉
